Back in boarding school we had to make our beds every morning before breakfast or you would get into serious trouble when the Sister in charge or the matrons came for inspection. This meant that before 6.30 am you were showered, dressed and your room in order. When I started undergrad my roommate always asked why I bothered making my bed every morning if no one was there to inspect me anymore. I thought about this and couldn't come up with a proper answer but I still continued to do it! It had been ingrained in my being after years of Catholic school. However by the time I graduated university, I had stopped making my bed and my roommate was the one who had caught the making the bed in the morning bug from me and she loved it. I am still trying to get my mojo back! Baby steps!
Then as luck would have it I came upon this UT Austin commencement speech by a Navy Seal about why making your bed every morning really does matter. The speech is about 10 life lessons from the Navy training but what tugged at my heart was the part about making my bed.
According to Naval Adm. William McRaven;
" If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.
By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you cant do the little things right you will never be able to do the big things right. And if by chance you have a miserable day you will come home to a bed that is made ...that you made ...and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow things will be better. So if you want to change the world start off by making your bed!"
